The city and the region- Past and present

Białystok offers many various attractions for its visitors. Its location has always had a crucial influence on its architecture, culture and ethnic diversity. Until now, it has been the mixture of different cultures. It is mostly inhabited by Poles but also by Belorussians, Lithuanians, Gypsies, Tatars, Ukraińcy. Ethnic diversity was even greater before the Second World War and at that time Białystok was inhabited by German and Jewish minorities. Thanks to this cultural diversity, Białystok gained its exceptional atmosphere and character, which are difficult to find in the world governed by globalisation. 
As far as architecture is concerned, careful observers can find here interesting treats of Baroque, during that time interesting solutions e.g. place-park bonding features of French and English styles were introduced. Treats of the beginning of Polish Modernism in the form of St. Roch’s Church, historic buildings of Warszawska Street. The time of  industrial revolution influenced Białystok strongly. “Manchester of the North” – this name was given to Białystok as the city was developing fast, especially in textile industry.
Urban architecture mixes here with wooden cottages. Nowadays, being unfortunately forgotten, they cannot resist destructive force of economy and they walk away into the shadow.
Białystok is also the capital of Podlasie. This is a land, where one can see a few precious and unique places in terms of country and regions. A major advantage of visiting Białystok is nature. Tourists are astonished by nature as it is beautiful and unspoilt.

 
Reserve Parks of Biosphere is situated not far from the city and it is the only Park that has been acknowledged by World’s Biosphere Reserve Park of UNESCO – Puszcza Białowieska www.bpn.com.pl. This is the only territory reminiscent primeval forest and before white people’s expansion it had sprouted European Lowland, from Carpathian Mountains to the Baltic Sea. To the North of Białystok there overflow virgin bogs of National Biebrzyński Park www.biebrza.org.pl (the biggest and the most primary complex of peat bogs) and Narwiański park www.npn.pl, which is the home of many unique bird species. Moreover, in the area of Podlasie there are valuable water ecosystems, which are a part of Wigerski National Park where people who are looking for active or passive relaxation find something for them.
